The New York Times has cataloged over 70 cases where suspects stated “I can’t breathe” before dying in police custody. One of the featured cases was the death of Rodney Brown who was tased after a traffic stop in Cleveland, ran and then was repeatedly tased a few blocks away. He was in distress while restrained and said, “I can’t breathe.” An officer replied, “So, who gives a F**k.” Tasing policies and training all came under review through the consent decree. The case was settled right before trial. Co-counsel were David Malik and Sara Gideon of Cleveland.
