She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William Paul Sample and one brother James R. Gerhardstein.
Kathy received her BS in nursing from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She worked as a nurse doing home health care with the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky; home health in southern Ohio, research on agricultural accidents, and in many other positions. She also became a licensed massage therapist and specialized in patients with lymphoma. She took guitar lessons from Bill in Illinois and the lessons turned into a marriage! They made wonderful music together for over thirty years. For many years they lived on 26 acres in Morrow, Ohio raising sheep and chickens. Together Bill and Kathy founded the Book Farm, a successful wholesale children’s book business that is still operating in Blanchester, Ohio. For a while they appeared together at festivals as the musical Partridge Hot Dog and Bun! Kathy and Bill laughed deeply and often.
Kathy grew up with five brothers. She was tough, independent, and practical.
Kathy lived life with positive energy and hope even as she faced the challenges of MS for over thirty years. She inspired all who knew her with her dignity and love. She was a spiritual seeker with an open mind and heart. Kathy’s family gives special appreciation to her many devoted caregivers and friends.
She is survived by four brothers: Michael (Margaret) Gerhardstein, Mark (Patricia May) Gerhardstein, Alphonse (Mimi Gingold) Gerhardstein, Jeffrey Gerhardstein. She loved her nieces and nephews – Ross Gerhardstein, Angela May, Brian Gerhardstein, David Gerhardstein, Max and Paula Gerhardstein, Benjamin and Adam Gerhardstein, and Jessica Gingold and introduced many of them to gathering eggs, birthing sheep and mud. She held a special place in her heart and on her lap for great nieces and nephews: Praia, Kira, Oliver, Justine, and Phoenix.
