Police Brutality

Most arrests and searches by the police are appropriate and lawful. A few are not. A free society must have a means to hold accountable those persons selected for law enforcement work who abuse their power. G&B files lawsuits against police officers who use excessive force when making an arrest; police officers who fabricate evidence; and police officers who increase the risk of harm facing a citizen. Economic freedom requires equal opportunity. G&B is committed to litigating the rights of those denied equal rights in the workplace, in housing, and in public accommodations. The firm pursues cases of race discrimination, sex discrimination, disability discrimination and has been a pioneer on sexual orientation discrimination, including claims by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons. Prisoner Abuse

The firm has represented prisoners in Ohio and elsewhere for more than thirty years. In 1976 there were only 12,000 prisoners in 7 Ohio prisons. Today there are over 40,000 prisoners in 32 Ohio prisons. In 1997 Partner Al Gerhardstein founded the non-profit Ohio Justice and Policy Center to expand the work of prison and criminal justice reform. www.Ohiojpc.org. Reproductive Freedom

The firm has served as local counsel for Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio www.plannedparenthood.org/swoh for more than twenty years. G&B has also frequently represented all of the abortion providers in the State of Ohio. Partners Al Gerhardstein and Jennifer Branch have filed numerous cases challenging Ohio laws restricting reproductive freedom, testified at the legislature against such measures and spoken publicly in an effort to remind citizens about the importance of protecting a woman’s right to make her own reproductive decisions. Civil Rights

Voting. The firm represented long time African American leaders Marian and Donald Spencer in an effort to remove Republican “challengers” from polling places in the African American precincts in Cincinnati the week before the November 2004 presidential election. Read More »
